Are we ready? The voluntary sector and volunteers in this economic downturn
Cathy Taylor, Executive Director, Volunteer Centre of Guelph/Wellington and member of ONN's Steering Committee reflects on the different impact that the economic downturn is having on the voluntary sector as compared to volunteerism. Read the article.
Snap Guelph’s “Volunteer of the Month” Program
The Volunteer Centre of Guelph/Wellington has partnered with Snap Guelph, a monthly print publication serving Guelph and Wellington County, to profile one volunteer/group of volunteers from a Volunteer Centre member agency each month. This is an opportunity for you to promote volunteerism, your organization, as well as to recognize the accomplishments of one of your volunteers or a group of volunteers at your agency.
If you are a member agency and want to nominate one of your volunteers, download the nomination form.
Volunteers are essential to the success of our charitable and non-profit organizations. “They coach, read, cook, mentor and train. They donate, give, chair, befriend and lend a helping hand. They plan, feed, soothe, visit, sew, plan, coordinate, paint, clean, sort and prepare. They are the young and the old and the in-between. And they are everywhere across this nation.” (Volunteer Canada)
It takes time, commitment and resources to effectively manage volunteers and an organization’s volunteer program. Some organizations have part-time or full-time paid managers of volunteer resources (or volunteer managers/coordinators). Others have volunteers who take on this role and yet others do not formally manage their volunteer resources. Wherever your organization is in this spectrum, the Volunteer Centre can help you improve and celebrate your volunteer program.
As an example, take a look at the Volunteer Management Cycle that we so often use in our workshops and training.

The Canadian Code for Volunteer Involvement is your best resource for Canadian standards for volunteer programs. Click here for its related Volunteer Management Audit tool – adapt this for your organization to see how you are doing. The Volunteer Centre can also conduct an external volunteer management audit of your organization.
